Fiber-optic perimeter detection can add an outdoor alarm layer around a warehouse yard or other defined boundary. It should support a planned response, with usable event locations and verification. It is not a guarantee that every attempted intrusion will be detected.
Begin with the warehouse alarm reference. A perimeter sensor supplements the building alarm design; it does not replace protection at doors, interior areas or critical assets.
What a fiber sensor does
These systems use fiber and processing equipment to detect disturbances associated with their intended application. Product designs differ. For example, Senstar’s FP400 is a zone-reporting fence sensor, while its FP1150 supports several perimeter applications and location reporting. Use the exact product documentation to establish suitable construction, reporting, installation and integration requirements.
A fiber cable carrying ordinary network data is not automatically an intrusion sensor. Keep the sensing design separate from the data backbone and low-voltage infrastructure.
Start with the boundary and operating conditions
Survey fence construction, gates, transitions, vegetation, vehicle activity and maintenance access. Identify where legitimate movement is expected. Record damaged or loose sections before specifying detection. The physical barrier and its condition are part of the design.
Define the event that matters in each area and who can respond. A sensor alert without a useful location, available camera view or response procedure can create operator workload without resolving the incident.

Confirm the actual interface between sensor processing and the alarm or management platform. A supported relay, software connection or other interface may carry different information. Test what arrives at the receiving end rather than assuming the product name guarantees full integration.
Verification cameras and usable evidence
Match the reported location to an appropriate camera view. Consider lighting, obstructions, moving vehicles and the time needed for an operator to assess an event. Test the recorded result as well as live viewing. Restrict evidence access to authorized roles and define retention through the organization’s approved policy.

Acceptance testing without performance promises
- Agree safe, manufacturer-approved tests and acceptance criteria before commissioning.
- Test representative locations and transitions under documented conditions.
- Confirm event location, timestamps, associated views and operator actions.
- Test relevant faults and restoration, including loss of communication or power.
- Observe routine site activity and investigate unwanted alarms.
- Record defects, corrective work and the final accepted configuration.
A demonstration under one set of conditions is not proof of performance under every condition. Record the limitations of the test. Review real operating results and have qualified personnel adjust the installation when evidence supports a change.
Maintenance and ownership
Assign responsibility for the fence, vegetation, sensing equipment, network and monitoring procedures. Reassess affected areas after fence repairs, gate changes, earthwork or new vehicle routes. Keep sensitive zone maps and configuration details in controlled facility records.
Track repeat nuisance events by area and cause. Avoid leaving protection bypassed without a documented reason, owner and restoration plan. Include scheduled inspection, testing and service access in the lifecycle budget.
Procurement questions
Ask the designer to state supported applications, detection boundaries, fault reporting, interfaces, verification coverage, commissioning evidence and maintenance requirements. Compare those documented outcomes across proposals. Do not accept claims such as “any intrusion will trigger an alarm” as a substitute for a tested design.
